Swansea City Roller Derby take second place in La Guerre des Etoiles tournament

On 9th and 10th March, Roller Derby Lille hosted La Guerre Des Etoiles with 6 teams from across Europe for a weekend of hard-fought roller derby.

SCRD went into the tournament ranked 5th out of 6 teams but came away with second place, losing to the host team in the final. It was a weekend of milestones for our team which saw us play our first sanctioned games as a WFTDA league which we have been preparing for on and off the track for many months.

Our first game was against tournament favourites Vienna Roller Derby. We knew Vienna were likely to be the toughest opponents we would meet all weekend having only lost one game in the last 12 months. In a game of lead changes where the final result wasn’t certain until the final whistle, SCRD were able to end their winning streak with a 190 – 163 victory.

After only a few hours rest we dug deep again to win 179 – 113 against Panthers Graou from Paris - a game we also won!!

The final on Sunday against the home team Switchblade RollerGrrrls. Swansea took an early lead but couldn’t quite hold on for the win with the final score 196 – 143 to Lille.

We’ve come away immensely proud of our achievements. We’ve played our first overseas tournament, played our first WFTDA games and want to thank our amazing opponents and all the tournament teams for a weekend we’ll never forget. We hope to see you on track again soon!
