A nail-biter in Vienna

Swansea City Roller Derby were invited to Vienna on 19th October for a rematch, after their win over the team at the Guerre des Etoiles tournament earlier in the year

Vienna’s Season Opening Triple Header featured three action-packed games in one day. Starting with Vienna Roller Derby Oysters vs The Royal Army – Royal Swedish Roller Derby. The Royal Army put up a good fight, but the home team prevailed with an impressive score of 156:90.

After a short rest The Royal Army were back on track to battle it out with SCRD Slayers. Despite having already played an hour of tough, hard-hitting roller derby, The Royal Army were no pushovers! With the half-time score being a little close for comfort, the Slayers regrouped and went hard on the attack in the second period, triumphing at the final whistle with a score of 208:127.

Following another brief respite, the derby action was back in full swing with the main event: Vienna vs SCRD – the rematch! Both teams gave everything they had, there was pride at stake on both sides. SCRD fought hard but trailed the home team for much of the game. After some half time tactics talk and some choice words of encouragement from Captain Hill and Bench Jones the Slayers were back on track and ready for the final assault. It was an incredibly hard-fought game with the most nail biting final 2 minutes you could imagine. In the end SCRD came out victorious, beating Vienna by 2 POINTS with a final score of 136:134!

It was an incredibly emotional day as the entire team had worked so hard and it was our Captain Hill and teammate Beck’s final game before retiring from roller derby. We are all incredibly proud to be a part of this team and everything we have achieved this year. Hill & Beck you will be sorely missed
